One of my favorite places to plein air paint is in the heart of Clarkdale.
There, I can do street paintings in a very peaceful setting, with just the ocassional onlooker going by. The whole town is a snapshot from the 1960's, and has so many inspirational nooks and crannies. The Classic Gas Station always has vintage cars in the lot that are being worked on. So, I set up my easel on a corner across the street from this classic bug, as I loved the round grey silhouette in mostly shadow, with just the front of the car catching the morning light.
Painting cars is a challenge, as the perspective and drawing needs to be correct, not to mention the features lining up in the right places.
Fortunately, my son, Eric is a buff, and he will inform me as to how accurate my renderings are.
This particular image involved a couple of cars, plus old campers as a background, so it was a great exercise in the architecture of the subject.
Someting like this really keeps me on my toes, but rest assured it was a blast to paint!
