Deep Vermillion Shadows

This studio oil is from a hike during the magical time of day when the shadows become dark and mysterious, and the light struck areas take on a rich glow. It is a trail off of Dry Creek road , when I made a point of capturing this time of day in photos to use later. 

I used a few combined for this painting.

Notice how some of the cliff shadows are transparent, as I was able to leave some of the underpainting showing. The deliberate drips worked out; which they duplicate desert varnish perfectly!

The foreground is left vague and shadowy, to get the feeling of the encroaching dusk.
