No Resolutions , No Regrets . Happy 2016 !
I have never been one for making New Year's Resolutions. ( Except for buying new calendars) I tend to set many goals during the course of the year, work hard towards them, and have been fortunate enough to accomplish what I set out to do most of the time.
This year, I have been thinking about what I do NOT want to do. Not resolutions, if you will.
One is comparing myself to others. We all have something to say, in our own way. When I hear of someone being in a prestigious show, or getting nice publicity, I know that I'll have an opportunity to be in a show that is just as prestigious, or enjoy my turn in the limelight along the way. As someone once pointed out to me when I congratulated her on a particularly nice article, she simply said that " We all take turns."
Another thing is that I am genuinely happy for that person , particularly when it is work that I admire. ( Sometimes the work is questionable, but that's another story.)
I will not be so frustrated with failed paintings. This is a tough one, because as an artist, I continually want to improve. However, I know at this point, it is all a learning curve, and failures are inevitable. I know that it is just time to move right on to the next piece.
A big one for me is feeling that I've been passed over for an opportunity, or being rejected. I just do NOT want to care about this so much! Sometimes when it comes right down to it, the seemingly golden opportunity is not so glamorous as it seems. There are always expenses involved, and perhaps more work, stress and effort than it is all worth.
...and many times another opportunity just comes right out of the blue !

I do know that I'll continue to work hard, and think about those things that I want to avoid.
I also know that it is far better, in accomplishing goals to think about the positive things... so, I will follow my own path, keep learning how to make my work better, and enjoy the wonderful things that do come along.
So, Happy New Year everyone!
May 2016 be a year full of joy, prosperity and beauty for each of you.
