I am a much less accomplished artist, selling pastel paintings for the last 2 years, at shows and online (on social media).
I previously had moderate success with creating and selling stained glass in two galleries. My severe arthritis required a switch to a gentler medium.
I like knowing who is buying the art, and though I haven't written down who bought what- I think I can recall the details and will start keeping a record.

Keeping Track of Work-the Sunday Post

It is sometimes hard to believe that I have been painting for several decades...and have sold many works over the years.
I do have visual records of most of my work.
Sometimes, I'll come across an image, and wonder just where it ended up, or who is enjoying it.

"Biltmore Corner" is just such a painting.
It was sold, and went to a good home. However, as it was sold through a gallery in north Carolina, I never got to know who had purchased it. It was nice to get the check, but I came across the image recently, and it made me wonder.

"Portico Pathway" is another such work. this was sold through a gallery in Virginia, and I have no idea of where it is.
both pieces, I think were little gems. It is a shame that I have no contact with the collectors who purchased the pieces. It would be so nice to maintain contact. Much as I enjoyed working with the galleries that I did, this has always bothered me.
Very recently, I made the decision to no longer deal with galleries for my sales.
I have had good relationships with the galleries that I have worked with in the past, please don't get me wrong. These days, however, artists must take more and more of the marketing, and getting the work in front of the buying public in to their own hands.
It is a very rewarding and gratifying process to work with my collectors directly. I now know where my work is, and how much it is being appreciated and enjoyed. And I now stay in touch with those who have my work in their homes.
How about you if you are an artist reading this? Do you present your work yourself, or do you deal with galleries?
And if you are a collector, do you prefer working with galleries, or meeting and purchasing from the creator of the work?
Interesting question...one that I think will get more and more play as galleries continue to close.
